Book Review - Projects and Techniques for Metal Clay Jewelry
By Tammy Honaman
When metal clay was first created, there was almost no detailed information available for the masses. Slowly, tutorials began appearing in magazines, and it seemed like a new book was being published every month. After about ten years the internet took over, and the demand for the written word diminished, but something really delicious and satisfying happens within your brain when you’re able to hold a book in your hands and curl up with a cup of something tasty to develop a deeper understanding of the creative concepts presented therein. So when I saw a reference to Projects and Techniques for Metal Clay Jewelry by Tamara (Tammy) Honaman on Facebook (the first new publication to hit the market in about 5 years), I knew I wanted to review it.
Pre Reqs
My usual practice with any ‘new to me’ book is to read it cover to cover before flipping forward to see the projects, and my perusal into Projects and Techniques has been no different.
The practical overview is extensive and covers almost everything a creator who is new to metal clay would want to know from tools and equipment, to refining techniques, to firing tips, to finishing practices.
As a teacher of over 20 years, I imagine we all could/would like to add our own 2¢ to anyone else’s metal clay POV (some of you even may disagree with my points of view/opinions from time to time), and there are some details mentioned in Tools, Materials, and Techniques that I’d like to amend (more on these later), but all in all
